Chicago vacations are becoming the vacation of choice for many people across the United States, and even across the globe. As the largest city in the American Midwest and housing a population of over 3 million people, Chicago is a major center of culture, transportation, politics and industry. Founded in 1833, the “Windy City” has continued to hold its title as one of the most interesting and most visited cities in the American Midwest.

With thousands of restaurants, hundreds of annual conventions, and some of the most exciting architecture in the world, Chicago vacations are increasingly becoming the destination vacations of choice for both foreign and domestic visitors! Whether you’re from Europe, Africa, or even neighboring Wisconsin, there are thousands of things to see, do, taste, and experience when you visit Chicago.

Some of the famous sites worth visiting in Chicago include:

  • Chicago Cultural Center the first permanent public library in Chicago, now home to the city’s center for Visitor Information.
  • Millennium Park the rebuilt area of a former train yard, the Park now houses several groundbreaking pieces of sculpture, such as the Crown Fountain.
  • The Pritzker Pavilion a stainless steel band shell, where the annual free Grant Park Music Festival presents a series of concert pieces every summer.
  • Navy Pier a 3000-foot pier, with incredible restaurants, shopping and exhibitions, right on the waterfront!
  • The Chicago Ferris Wheel this 150-foot high Ferris wheel is one of the most popular tourist sites in the American Midwest, and attracts over 8 million people alone each year.

On this website, you’ll find tons of information on Chicago vacations, including: Chicago vacation packages, Chicago family vacations and family vacation packages, Chicago vacation deals, Chicago vacation rentals, vacation condos in Chicago, Chicago hotels both downtown and in the outlying areas, ski vacations near Chicago, as well as where to go to visit Chicago museums!

If you’re feeling a little uncertain about the weather, due to Chicago’s nickname of ‘the Windy City’, consider this: the nickname is rumored to have come from an editor named Charles Dana in 1893, who was unhappy that Chicago had just won a bid to host the World’s Fair, beating out New York! In an article for the Chicago Tribune, Dana called Chicago a ‘windy city’ in other words, a place full of braggarts who couldn’t build a World’s Fair if they won it. How wrong he was!

Certainly, natural geography makes the Chicago area a little windy at times, but the climate is similar to other areas in the Midwest. With four separate seasons, visitors can tailor their Chicago vacation to their preferred weather. Even better, Chicago’s summer rainstorms tend to be short and intense, rather than drawn out over several days so you won’t have to worry about canceling outdoor plans!

At the 1893 World’s Fair, Chicago was named one of the ten most influential cities in the world. In 2005, 33 million foreign and domestic tourists chose Chicago vacations. Clearly, the city has continued to hold onto its reputation as a city of cultural and economic influence, worthy of taking the time to visit and explore.
